What to expect
The more we know, the better. Before any test is ordered, our team wants to understand your situation. What you've already been through. What questions you most need answered.
Pre-test genetic counseling comes first. A genetic counselor will explain what whole genome sequencing can and cannot tell you, what kinds of results may come back, and what choices you may need to make before testing begins. Your counseling sessions are with a genetic counselor from DNAVisit, our telehealth counseling partner. If you're using Louisiana Medicaid, this conversation is required before testing. It's a good rule. It means nobody starts this without understanding what they're going to learn about their health.
The test is simple. Whole genome sequencing starts with a saliva or cheek swab done in your home. We handle the logistics of getting the kit to you, supporting sample collection, and getting results back to you and your doctor. Most families have results within five weeks. We don't disappear after results. This is the part that makes Jura different. When your results are ready, a genetic counselor talks with you directly and walks you through what they mean in plain language, not medical jargon. Your provider receives the full report too, and genetic counselors and geneticists are available to support them before and after the test. Jura also provides personalized next-step resources to help you understand what to consider next and what to discuss with your care team.
One of three things will be true.
Sometimes there's a clear answer. A diagnosis, a name, and a place to start.
Sometimes there's a partial answer. Something worth watching, or a lead worth following, even if it's not the whole story yet.
And sometimes there's no answer yet. The test doesn't find what we were hoping it would find.
Here's what we want you to know before you begin. A negative result is where the medical system usually closes the file. We don't. If we don't find an answer this time, your genome doesn't expire. As science learns more, your data can be looked at again. And no matter which of the three it is, nobody gets handed a result and left alone with it
Is this different from a DNA test I can order online?
A lot of tests can read your DNA. Very few can tell your doctor what to do about it, or give you the support to act on it.
That's the difference. A test you order online gives you a file. A result from a test like that generally can't be used to make a medical decision. Before your doctor can act on it, it has to be confirmed by a clinical-grade test anyway. Which means the years you already spent searching just got longer.
And a negative result doesn't mean you're in the clear either. A cheaper test that only checks a small set of markers can come back negative simply because it never looked at the gene actually causing the problem. Jura's test analyzes roughly 20,000 genes and 4 million genetic variants across 10,000 known conditions. A negative from us means something. A negative from a narrow test often just means you weren't looking in the right place.
Jura's test is the one your doctor can use. It's the one insurance can pay for. And it comes with a person, not an app. Someone who explains what your results mean, and calls you back even when they say nothing at all.
